Look at the year as a whole

Income records are the starting point. Changes in employment, family circumstances or the sources of your income may also be relevant. Identify the year under review and bring any tax statement or correspondence that needs attention.

Ask which reliefs actually apply

Deductions and allowances are not interchangeable with a guaranteed refund. Eligible education costs or approved cultural and creative course fees may deserve a closer look, but the year, qualifying provider, personal circumstances and supporting evidence matter. An old course advertisement is not confirmation of eligibility for a later year.

Parent-related tax treatment also needs to be checked against the applicable conditions. The MTCA’s 2026 FS4 guidance sets out different tax-status categories; having children does not, on its own, establish entitlement to every category. If your employment tax status has changed, ask whether the declaration needs updating.

Separate submission from settlement

A return tells the authority about the relevant income and tax position. Paying the amount due is a separate obligation. MTCA guidance distinguishes the filing cycle from tax settlement, so an electronic filing extension should not be treated as extra time to pay.

Lotus can help review your circumstances, discuss applicable reliefs and address return preparation or submission questions. Begin with a summary of what changed and the period involved; sensitive records can be shared through an agreed channel afterwards.
