Confirm the registration position
Jobsplus provides a self-employment registration route for people working without employees. Other situations, including partnerships or employing staff, need their own review. Check the requirements for the activity and personal circumstances.
- Describe whether this will be your main activity or run alongside employment.
- Identify any existing registrations, proposed start date and activity-related permissions.
- Ask which Jobsplus, tax and VAT steps apply, and who will complete them.
Organise income and expenditure
Keeping a receipt does not establish that an expense is deductible. Maintain a clear record and ask which treatment applies.
- Record invoices or receipts issued, customer payments and outstanding amounts.
- Separate business purchases and costs from private spending and identify mixed-use items.
- Reconcile payments against the relevant account records and flag missing evidence.
Review tax, VAT and social security separately
The Department of Social Security explains the contribution categories. The correct position depends on your circumstances; do not assume that having another job or modest turnover settles all obligations.
- Confirm the tax reporting periods and applicable payment responsibilities.
- Review VAT using the actual supplies and purchases, including transactions with other countries.
- Check the appropriate contribution position with the relevant authority or adviser and keep official notices together.
